What are end-life and palliative care?
Pedagogical guide for educator
This exercise contains three separate activities that could be done either in one or split into more sessions.
Activity 1 is entitled “Get to know more about palliative care” and challenges AAWID to reflect on the topic of palliative and end-life care provision.
Steps:
- The educator should first invite AAWID to recall a story of his friend or acquaintance who has used palliative care services - what was the case, how he was supported, what were the benefits for him? If AAWID finds difficulties in remembering such a story, the educator may suggest to him the story placed in the Activity section.
The educator could help AAWID to understand the essence of the story by asking him directing questions:- What requires Chris to use end-life and palliative care services?
- What type of services Chris receives in the hospice he choose?
- Why Isabel is helping Chris in making such an important decision?
- The final part of the Activity is in the format of a quiz, as AAWID should answer three questions with three possible answers each and thus to demonstrate his knowledge and understanding regarding palliative and end-life care.
Activity 2 is entitled “Creating awareness about palliative care” and aims at providing more detailed and easy-to-understand information to AAWID concerning palliative and end-life care.
Steps:
- AAWID should first watch some videos on the topic – it depends on the ability for concentration of AAWID how many videos will be watched in one session. In the template the educator would find three videos that could use if deem appropriate.
- Then, based on the information he has got from the video/videos, to write down in a table the 3 most important things he has learned about palliative care, 3 things he has not been able to understand about palliative care, and 3 things about palliative care he wants to learn more about.
NOTE: The educator should find appropriate videos that reflect the reality in the country of residence. The videos should be either in their national language or have translated subtitles. |
Activity 3 “Discussing the things important to me”
In this exercise, the roles are switched and AAWID is invited to ask the educator all the questions he has about the PC services. If necessary, the AAWID could use the table from the previous activity and start discussing with his educator each statement listed there. The educator should remind AAWID that there are no wrong or right questions or statements, and they just reflect together on the things AAWID considers important to him in the scope of palliative care
